Unhappy Trans Issues, Upshifting and not engaging forward

So i went to work this morning just fine, didnt feel or hear anything out of the ordinary. Later however, after the truck had sat for approximately 3-4 hours after i get home, i went for another drive. This time i noticed that i was driving 55mph at 3k rpms. No matter what i did, it would not upshift. i picked up some ATF+4 and a new filter, since it had never been changed before, figuring that was the problem. However right before i got home, i lost the trans, for forward gears at all. Reverse still worked fine. I turned the truck off and let it cool for 10 minutes, and i got my forward gears back, with what felt like a light grinding feel. Ive read through other posts, and am just wondering what ppls opinions are? thanks all

check valve is plugged up and not allowing fluid to be cooled, and it overheated....did your dummy light come on?

this is my opinion by the way.

The 55mph 3krpm not shifting sounds like the TV cable. The loss of driving gears is something else.

I'm no tranny expert, and I've been getting in over my head and confusing tranny threads the last day or so. But, that sounds like it needs the bands adjusted and a new Governor pressure sensor and solenoid. And yes, make sure the TV cable is not busted. And if your speedometer is acting strange, it could be the Output Shaft Speed sensor.

thanks for the info.

@95RAM360: no, no CEL. It occasionally throws the 02 sensor code and VERY occasionally a cylinder 8 misfire code.

@CappinHoff: i did just have the TB off to replace the plenum with a hughes engines plate. However ive been driving it for 2 weeks since i replaced the plenum plate with no problems. I did reset the computer. also changed coolant temp sensor and thermostat. the 3k RPMs was related to it not shifting into 3rd.

@zman17: the speedo is acting fine. TV cable is not busted or loose, acting like it should.

Did the filter and fluid change today, didnt find frayed wires or anything, fluid was definately burnt, and no sludge in the bottom of the pan. Tried driving it, got about 1000 yards. i let off the gas to slow down a bit, everything was fine, got back on the gas a little, and the engine revved like i was in neutral. no clunks, bumps, shudder, nothing. still have reverse however. next step is to replace the solenoids and delete the check valve. i took a quick glance at the check valve, and it was wet like it was leaking, i assumed its because its backed up. any other suggestions?
