Default How to buy a used tuner

I've seen a few tuners on Craigslist locally.

What should I look for when buying a used tuner?

Do they need to be unlocked or unregistered? (or anything like that)

You need to make sure that the current owner has set their truck back to the stock tune. If not, you will have to send the tuner back to the manufacture to get it unlocked and then have a tune written for your truck. You would essentially pay for a brand new tuner by then.

If it's a Hypertech it might be VIN locked and won't work even if the PO returned to stock tune.

I looked around on craiglist and ebay for my tuner. After some research, I decided to purchase mine through a member on the forum. PM hemifever- he sells the sct tuner with 3 canned tunes. You can purchase custom tunes later after any engine mods you make. Highly recommend going this route. Quick shipping and excellant customer service!

If you do buy from craiglist or ebay- the unit should be "unlocked" as zman said. Most of the times the seller will shoot a picture of the units display. If the unit were locked it should say something to the effect "VIN XXXX lock". I even called superchips customer service to verify a unit was not stolen. I read somewhere that superchips would not service a stolen tuner.
