New Project
Hey guys, I'm back. I just got into a deal with my friend and his dad, where my friend and I work on some trucks that he bought from a plant, fix them and split the profits. My friend and I picked out a 1998 Dodge Ram, a lot like my old one, except 4x4, club cab, 5.9l, lwb and only 118k. It's auto with a lift, but stock looking tires. It's purple, so it'll be right up PurplDodges alley.
Anyway, today we started working on it. We picked up a battery for it, since the one in it was toast. The oil checked out fine. Quick inspection looked promising. I started cranking on it, got it to fire, but then it died right after. I cranked it again, gave it a little gas, and it was running, until my friend yelled at me to cut it off. He said it was smoking, I let off the throttle, it died, and I ran around and the alternator was smoking with a little fire from the pulley. Looked at the alternator, and it turns out the aluminum casing was cracked almost in half. Looks like thats the next thing on the list.
Anyway, the truck hasnt been inspected since 2008. I'm assuming it hasn't been run in a while, so what steps should I take on this truck to get it into running shape? Thanks guys, and I'll keep you guys updated with the progress.

. I'll get some Techron tomorrow, because I'm pretty sure I'm workin with some old gas. How's your truck been? I remember one of yours got wrecked.

low battery causes poor or no idle and acts like a bad IAC. get battery up to 12 volts with engine off and 14 volts with engine running before working on IAC. if you still have a problem, remove the IAC and check the port at the end of the well. observe the top side of the throttle body while running to see if the IAC is moving in/out trying to keep it running. if not, replace it.
