but just a regular ol' dual in dual out single chamber muffler accomplishes the same thing as an x or h pipe, right?

I got it all installed today.. this is what I went with, and a brief account of performance:

I went with a MagnaFlow True X muffler...Dual 3" In/ Dual 3" Out.. that thing is HUGE, and I swear I could drop a golf ball down one pipe and watch it fall straight through w/o touching a thing..

I went with two magna flow high flow cats which were about the size of a football.. 2.5" in/ 2.5" out.. they have the bung for the o2 sensor in the upwind side..

I eliminated the factory Y pipe, but kept a crossover.. The two pipes run parallel to the MagnaFlow muffler, and split again to the rear bumper and dump straight out.. I have true dual and properly monitored exhaust.. I never thought I'd say it, but thanks California Emissions Board, Signed Drew- from North Carolina..

whatever, right? performance:

I dumped a FlowMaster Super 44, single in dual out for this rig.. It's not that it was performing badly, but I'm thinking it should breathe real nice now.. When I would apply throttle, there was this sensation of 'winding up'.. what I mean by that is there was a momentary lapse- almost like I was being held back by a string... and when that string broke, away I went.. but it seemed there was a 'ramp up' from the engine before it pushed a valve or something similar and let the spent fuel out.. I know that's not mechanically what was happening, I just can't think of a better way to explain it.. Now, WHEN it 'released', there was no lag.. It popped forward hard..

It doesn't do that anymore.. there is no 'POP' forward, but I hesitate to say I lost 'bottom end'.. It seems just as strong, but MUCH smoother of the line.. It climbs steady as can be and is extremely smooth throughout the entire range I've ran it.. It rev's very smoothly, and there is no 'hold' on the DEclining RPM's.. What I mean by that is: With the factory Y and the 2.25" piping (shared), it always felt like the RPM's dropped in 'stages'.. It happened fast, but it looked and felt like it drop in increments of 200 or so RPM, and lagged around 800 RPM before settling at idle of 600 RPM.. That is no more.. It revs smooth, and it drops just as smooth and quickly.. and if I rev to, say, 3k and drop it, and hit it again before it falls to idle, there is NO lag.. before it would hesitate and cough a little..

There is no huge gain out on the street... I doubt I produced a single pony by doing this, but who knows- maybe smoothing it out is hiding some horses in there.. I don't know if the 'puter has anything to learn- but we'll see... If I have anything to report I'll come back and comment here..
