46rh transmission question. (Valve body?)
I know this isn't a Ram but my 95 Grand Cherokee has the 46rh transmission in it so I figured this would be the best place to ask this question.
I just recently changed my transmission fluid and filter after I got a little bit of water in my transmission, which caused my tranny not to want to shift past 2nd gear. Now then, I changed the fluid and it now shifts past 2nd. My issue now though is, when I come to a stop, if the trans was in 3rd before stopping it sometimes (most of the time) won't downshift back down to first so I'll be taking off in 3rd. But if I manually shift it back down to 1st, then all is well and it takes off like normal. What could be the issue? I have already changed out the kickdown solenoid. I was talking with a friend of mine who used to have a Jeep TJ and his Jeep had the same issue and it ended up being his valve body was sticking. Could that be the issue and if so, how would I go about fixing it/cleaning it?
I've never gone that deep into a transmission, let alone an automatic. Also my Chiltons doesn't mention anything about the valve body and I have a 46rh service manual but it also doesn't mention how to take the valve body apart or removing it.

It could be the valve body. I’d drop the pan again and pull the valve body. Take the valves apart one by one, clean the bore and valve and reassemble. There is no valve body gasket used in the transmission so you shouldn’t need anything else. The bolts at each end of the valve body are the ones that hold it to the case. There’s an ATSG manual in the 1st gen Dakota section that’ll give you step by step instruction if you need it.
Did you have any clutch material in the pan when you changed it the first time? The clutch plates and bands have friction material that is glued with water soluble glue. – holds up great in tranny fluid but dissolves in water. The clutch facing fall off the steel cores when exposed to enough water. Hopefully that’s not your problem.
Good luck.

No there was not. and thanks I'll go ahead and look at that manual. now though my DD Neon just went out of commission so before I try anything new on the Jeep I have to fix the Neon first.
