Steering gearbox / Pitman Arm
I'm replacing the steering gearbox in my 1999 Ram 1500 4wd and have a couple questions:
- The replacement gearbox is out of a 1997 2wd, the housing looks generally the same, but the input shaft doesn't have the little extended tip on it that the 1999 version appears to have based on all of the illustrations I have seen so far (I haven't taken my 99 apart yet to verify the tip on the input shaft, but I bet it's there). What is this little tip for, I think the manual calls it a torsion bar or something, but what does it do and will the 97 gearbox work ok (and fit ok since it's from a different application)? Also, is there a ratio difference between the two boxes, since one is a 2wd and the other 4wd, and different years?
- My pitman arm is bent slightly, does anyone carry these new for the 4wd trucks? I've tried Rockauto, Autozone, Advance, etc, (all the local places and a few online), and all they show are 2wd or other applications, all seem to have a ball stud on the linkage end of the pitman arm. The 4wd arm has just a hole at the linkage end, since the ball stud is on the steering linkage itself. I've seen drop arms available of course, but I need stock height. Anybody near Kalamazoo, Michigan have a good used one available, or new one that wasn't needed?
Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Ron

Your looking for a Moog part# K440003. Call around, but I believe it will have to be ordered. As far as the pin on the end of the stub shaft goes, I wouldn't worry about it. I've replaced several gear boxes and some of the rebuilds have it and some don't.
Call here, http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...500&vi=1095971 Seems like this part has been discontinued. So JY or dealer may be your only option.
Also here http://www.wholesalemopar.com/parts_...FYnd4AodlWgpXg and LMCtruck has them listed.
