Default Transmission Problems - Code p1756

Hello everyone,

A couple years ago I sold my 1999 Dodge Ram Sport 5.9 to my brother-in-law. It was a great truck while I owned it, but I didn't put too many miles on it either.

Recently he has been having some transmission problems. He said that when the engine is cold everything runs just fine. After it warms up he has some problems with the transmission shifting from second to third gear, and sometimes from first to second. Apparently, if he puts the transmission selector into neutral it will shift when the RPM's drop.

He took it in to a transmission shop. They are trying to tell him he needs a new transmission, and that the job will cost approximately $2,800.

The interesting thing is that he has a friend who is a shade tree mechanic, and he looked at it for him. He ended up finding a code that said:

p1756 Governor pressure above 3 PSI in gear with 0 MPH.

I'm hoping maybe this code will tell us that he doesn't need a whole new transmission. Does anyone have any ideas?

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'd replace the Governor pressure switch and Governor solenoid.

Thanks for the quick reply zman17. I'll pass that on to my brother-in-law. Hopefully this will keep him from having to replace the whole transmission.

Get those two parts from a transmission shop. Or here http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm
