Unhappy 2001 tranny issues

We have an 01 Ram 1500, with 68k miles on it. While out shopping the other day, the tranny would just stop working, as in the rpm's would go up with no forward power to the truck. We noticed a whining sound almost as if it was power steering, but definitely coming from the tranny. We could shut the truck off, start it back up and it would go for a while. We limped it into a transmission shop. While there, hubby checked the transmission fluid level, smell and color. All of that was fine.

It seems to be electrical, as if when you shut the truck off, and restart it, it resets whatever it is for a while, then the part gets hot enough to start acting up again. If that makes any sense.

Of course the tranny place wants to just put another transmission in the truck, and get $2700 from us. But we don't think that its that bad, and would like to try another route first.

Dodge will hook her up for diagnostics for us for $60. Will it show codes even though none of the idiot lights came on?

Just wondering if anyone has had this issue. Hubby said its the 518 transmission.

Thanks in advance for any help that you all can provide. I was happy to stumble upon your forum.

Have the bands adjusted and the governor pressure switch and solenoid replaced.

Would you recommend doing the diagnostics then? Or just take it to a tranny place that will actually dig into it.

Take it to a different tranny shop that has a capable scanner to check the pressures.
