Default O/D no like the cold?

On my way home from work tonight my gas light went off. Not really a cause for concern other than I only had 180 miles on this tank, and the first 75 of these ate about as much fuel as it normally did. A short while later I determined the cause of my greatly increased fuel consumption, OD wasn't engaging. (100 miles at 50-70 MPH apparently eats a lot of gas with no OD.... Who knew???) Anyway I'm wondering if anyone else has had problems with OD in the cold. Had something like a -30* windchill today and i was driving into the wind. I checked tranny fluid when I filled the tank and it read high, although when i flushed it in the fall i know i didn't put in three extra quarts. I don't have a tranny temp sensor But the engine temp was around 100.

What are your thoughts?

are you in neutral when you check because you have to be on level surface in neutral to check tranny fluid levels

Your engine temp was only around 100? Holy *****. Yes, it is a known thing with these trucks that the O/D will not actuate until the tranny warms up to a certain temp in below 0 situations.

I live in NW montana, if its colder than -5 out your OD will not work. Its to protect the tranny, I have to live with it all winter lol...

Lol like I said. I think it was hovering around 4 below last night. Wind chill dropped it to the neighborhood of 30 and i was driving into the wind.

I was in park not neutral. I'll check again later this morning

And thanks. I guess it is nice of them to protect the tranny, but this is kind of a pain. NE South dakota Has horribly cold weather Josh I don't suppose blocking part of your radiator would help any? the engine would be warmer at least.

My 2nd gen would always take a while to go into overdrive when cold (3rd gen does to), but once the tranny is warm it should slip right in... at least mine always did, even if it was well below zero.
