Post 4x4 engagement problems

When i put my 96 ram in 4hi or 4lo it engages fine. when i drive down the road about every 1/4 mile or so i will get a loud clunk from the front end. the 4x4 will stay engaged but the indicator light will flash and the come back on. just put on a new acuator and pads. could this be a small vacuum leak that is bleeding off and then slipping on the splines. please help i'm afraid i'm going to tear something up. we have alot of snow and i need my 4x4. thanks

the plenum plate is on the bottom on the intake and is a common problem with our trucks. the cable conversion will set you back approx 200 but its worth every dime. as for messing anything up with it popping that front axle in and out of engagement could hurt t-case, driveshaft u-joints, and the bearings in the diff. so it a good idea to fix asap. the lines that run down off intake down th tcase are plastic and tend to break which can be repaired with a short section of vaccum hose and the conections at the actuator and the transmission cross member are special rubber vaccum connector and tend to loosen up and leak over time.
