about the largest tire you can run on a stock 4wd with no lift and no rubbing is a 285/75/16. 2wd might be a little less. rubbing on control arms would be caused by the wider width (285+) rather than the height ratio (70 vs 75).

here's one of many tire size calculators.

The biggest tire you can fit on a 2wd is 265/75/16, they're on my truck now. They way my truck eats through tires I'm going the re tread rout next time. Tired of spending 700+ on tires and my truck chops them up.

Thanks for the info - I think the 265/75/16 is fine for my truck; I have had good experience with the BF Goodrich Long Trail T/A. Had them on another truck way back - the tires were quiet and lasted a long time.

Why does your truck eat through tires? Could there be something wrong with the suspension or alignment?

I got a few thousand miles on my retreads so far. Got the 265/75/16 guard dogs. They are doing fine in the snow so far.

From day one my truck has never liked tires. Likes to chop them up on the outside. Alignment is perfect and I don't have very much play in the steering. Once I get some cash I'm gonna re do the entire front end. Everything down there except ball joints has 252k on it.

Just curious, where do you get these re-treads, like the Guard Dogs? Do local tire shops sell them?
