Default Pinging

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Off Road package: Engine Pinging
Already use upper clynder cleaner staight into injection system. Has
automatic timing. Can't retard timing. Did full tuneup. Tryed to
install Superchip. Made pinging VERY BAD. 90,000 miles on truck. To
soon for timing chain. Computer should be able to ajust for chain
wear. No head work has been done, so compression should be factory.
Dealership said it is carbon deposits, already cleaned them. Any
ideas where to go from here.
Thanks,
Sean

Default RE: Pinging

you might want to look at the plenum gasket. they leak and have been known to cause pinging from excessive oil use. look down the throttle body and look for oil pooling on the bottom of the intake manifold. and if you have the TB off, use a mirror to look in the corners of the manifold to be sure. mine was leaking on the end. I was using the updated mopar gasket, the metal one...

the timing chains have been known to become loose as early as 40k due to the nylon that dodge supposedly put on the gears to keep it quiet (this is just what I've read). I had my chain off in May and there was easily 1" or so of play, I should have measured it. but I did take some pics...
