Default Thermostat

Randomally, my heat gauge spikes and cold air comes through the heater vents. Then I hear a gush of coolant and everything returns to normal. Is this just a bad thermostat or a symptom of something larger

Low coolant and air in the coolant system. Check your radiator and top off as needed.

I agree. Low coolant. top if off, drive it, top if off, drive it, and top if off. don't worry you can't over fill it, it has a pressure release.
