Wonder if that is up with mine. I noticed mine would not want to go into reverse right away, but now I have lost reverse completly.

I have been have lots of shifting issues. Not wanting to leave second ever until I stop and run it up to park and go again. Not wanting to use overdrive even after it has clearly warmed up enough to shift into it. I have had it downshift out of OD while running 75mph, so you know I was already running 2-2500 RPMs, I did not accelerate or go up a hill to cause this. The area was flat and maybe a little down hill. Anyway it revved up and into the red zone and hit the rev limiter. I basically mashed on the brakes since no one was behind me, just so I didn't blow the motor up.

I will be getting at minimum a new auto tranny (under warranty from the last new one 20k ago.) Hopefully I can get up the courage to do the manual swap I have been looking into.

Good luck, that tranny has had a good hard run at life. I was told that most of them go out around 130k. I know my first one did.

I've checked the odometer readout for codes, and at least right now, it's not throwing any. How long would a code stay in the computer? Maybe I need to check for codes right when the tranny is acting up.

Any chance a clogging check valve could cause these problems? Or maybe just a clogged trans filter?

The codes should stay until you clear them. If the CEL is on the there should definatly be one. This thread is the first I have heard of the check valve issue, I will definatly be fixing that when I get my truck back, if I dont do the manual swap I have been looking at.

No CEL, and no codes when I checked it. I wasn't sure if it was possible to throw codes yet still not have the CEL on.

I found a decent sounding trans. shop so I'm gonna take it in and see what they say. At the very least get a fluid change and band adjustment.

The Valve Body can removed and the front clutch circuit can be checked with air pressure ......However there are no electronic issues that will cause a no reverse situation in the 96...So i would plan on removing and freshening up this trans..
