Axle seal name
I am replacing my axle seals and when i went to the parts store today i was given a couple names (which i cant remember) to choose from for the seals them selves. My question is what is the name of the seal on the drivers side, I plan on changing both seals but i just want to be informed as to what the names of the seals are. I assume they are different because the axles are different diameters so i dont want to mix them up. Thanks i tried looking in all the threads but couldnt find anything.
they're just called "front axle seal", Left (drivers) and Right (passenger). Might be called inner's rather than the outer's (which are just slingers)
Napa's SKF or Advance's National are good brands. Timken seals suck.
Advance links, but not the proper pictures.

don't be confused by the outer slingers which optionally go on the end of the axle tube. these keep out rocks and sticks and some heavy mud, but are not water tight, oil tight seals. mine doesn't have them at all. i don't think they ever did?

you're braver than most
quad 4x4 sells an installation tool, that i HIGHLY reccomend. guaranteed to install the first seal correctly, the FIRST time... NO LEAKS. as opposed to your homeade tool that WILL install the seal crooked. be sure to THOROUGHLY clean out the axle with parts cleaner. its also a GREAT time to check out the CAD. check the output bearing and outer shaft bushing for wear. ensure that the collar slides freely. u-joints arent a bad idea either.

I will second matty675's suggestion that you buy the appropriate install tool for the right (passenger) front seal. If you try to use a home made rig you can plan on ruining many seals before you get one installed correctly.
X2, my dad and I made a tool from some nuts, threaded rod and an old bearing install tool, the seal seated well the first time and hasn't leaked since.
