how do i know if my transfer case is bad
at a minimum, jack up the front. better yet put the whole truck up on 4 jack stands or a lift and operate it.
crank the truck and shift to 4wd. screw around with it until the 4wd light comes on. this indicates the front axle is locked all the way across.
operate truck and verify the front drive shaft is turning. or - shut off truck and turn the passenger side front wheel. if nothing else moves, the axle is not locked and that's a problem. if the drivers side wheel turns, then that's a good sign and the axle is locked.
the main thing you are looking for is that under power, the front drive shaft turns. that's the job of the t-case.
