Default temp gauge help on 97 ram

Hello once again guys, I just recently got my truck back from having a rebuilt tranny put in and when I got the truck back the temp gauge was not working. the mechanic said the sending unit was working fine that the gauge was bad. I put in a new cluster and gauge still does not work. I grounded the wire from the sending unit and it spiked the gauge which tells me that the gauge works. I put in a new sending unit but the gauge still does not read any temp what else could be causing the problem. is it possible that the connector the wire is in is not allowing the wire to touch the sending unit?
