I can't figure out what the heck the rotating **** is for???
You can turn it about three turns at all times. It says nothing in the instructions about what the **** is for! I assume it's to adjust the cable length. It doesn't seem to help engage or disengage the four wheel drive.
I usually have to be rolling to get the cable to pull out. And usually it only comes out about 1/2" .I roll further and continue trying to pull it and it finally fully engages. I don't have any trouble with it coming disengaged while driving thankfully. Then when I try to disengage, it seems to disengage the fastest when I pull forward and reverse about three times and it finally comes out. Guess I expected it to fully engage and disengage with a simple pull and push of the cable. Anybody experience this? Guess I can't complain, at least the four wheel stays in four wheel when I finally get it locked in!

The pull **** rotates on mine too. It could be an adjustment to cable length as it stretches over time. I noticed if mine works its way out or I turn it out it can cause the collar to rub on the inner shaft and grind a bit so I keep it pushed and rotated in as far as I can.
I have found the best way to engage/disengage is steady pressure with the t-case in 4x4. Mine has never engaged or disengaged when I did not want it to and its been at least 2 years.

i think the rotating **** is a fine adjustment on cable length to get the 4wd light to be off when the **** is pushed all the way in.
mine was sluggish to engage/disengage with vac cad, and remained sluggish/difficult with the posilok. the first 1/2 inch pulls the collar over where it meets a little resistance, and then the next 1/2 is the full engagement. mine will grind at the halfway point.
when i pulled the axles to replace u-joints i found my problems.
worn out bushings and bearings creating alignment problems.
burrs on the axle splline and collars creating tight clearances.
i replaced the bushings/bearings and filed down all the burrs and it was much improved.
