Default Front Axle Leak

2000 Ram 1500

The front axle is leaking gear lube. It is draining down the axle tube and dripping onto the tire and steering knuckle. I am assuming that the seal in the gear housing is bad. Any one else have this problem and how was it resolved? Thanks guys.

I had the same issue, the dealership caught it. They replaced all three seals on the front axles, one at each end and one by the differential. It cost me like $600. However, I do get another 2mpg after having that done, probably having all that gear oil replaced helped.

My 2000 ram 4x4 had this leak from the rear seals in the axle. The last ower brought this truck to the dealership constantly and it ended up leaking on both rear brake shoes. It seems we must have suffered from a bad batch of seals.

I have a 95 dodge ram 1500 4x4 and my drivers side front axle seal leaks a little bit. I'm not sure how envolved it is to change the seals but it looks like you need a special tool to press the new seals in. Has anyone replaced these seals themselves?

I just had both front seals replaced in my 1997 1500 5.9L. I paid 16.95 ea for the seals and my mechanic charged me $20 for labor. I'd just take it to a mechanic.

$20?? That's real good. There are only a couple places around here that will do it and the cheapest i have found is $350 + parts and I thought that was good. From what I can tell it's a pretty involved process. You have to completely tear down the gear case. But hell, $20 - can't beat that with a stick.

$20 for labor, he must really need the work. They need to pull the front wheel asssemblies apart and the differential to replace the seals. Good deal if they did it right.

That's a dana 60 axle he's changing them on, but it should give you some idea as to how involved it is. I just did it on my 94.
