Default grinding noise in front end of 1998 dodge ram 1500 4x4

Need Help please!! I have a grinding noise that sounds like the 4wd is trying to engage while I'm driving in 2wd. It don't do it all the time just when you take off and when the tranny shifts thru the gears sometimes. I've check everything I can think of. gears, axles, vacuum motor, new vacuum switch and the vacuum is 20lbs in 2wd and 12lbs in 4wd at the vacuum motor. The vacuum motor moves the shift fork both ways like it should so I don't know what else to try. I've read on here about a snap ring breaking in the t-case but the noise is more in the front end. thanks for your help, Bryan
