Hello, Im new to the DF and got a 1996 Dodge ram 2500 4x4 and got a oil leak im trying to find and fix, i have changed the rear main seal and the oil pan gasket and still trying to find out where and how to stop this leak since it only leaks with the engine being ran and hot... Please help.....
see if you can get your hands on some dye they sell at parts stores and it to your oil let it run warm up then go under it with a black light follow the dye trail to your leak
With the dye will it work the same outdoors and be able to be seen with the blacklight or do i have to have it inside a garage to see it better? I have never worked with this dye and so i would like as much advice as possible...
A good cleaning of the engine will allow you to locate the oil leak easily. How much oil is leaking out if it is a great deal then just letting it idle in place will let you pinpoint the area the oil is coming from. Oil could come from many areas other then the pan or rear main. The front main timing chain cover valve cover gaskets or even from a failing oil pressure sensor. I would also make sure it is oil and not tranny fluid or power steering fluid.
Does anyone have any advice on how to use and look for the dye when i put it in the truck? I have never dealt with this stuff before and would like to learn as much as i can before i use it??????
The intake manifold end gaskets are made of cork, and they leak after time, I would have a feel around the back of the intake to check for oil. No it won't be easy to reach but you can do it. Wash the motor good top to bottom this will help you find the leak.
Check the PCV valve! when the engine is running and hoy=t it builds pressure in the crankcase and if the PCV valve is stopped up it will push out the oil pan gasket or the rear main seal no matter how mny time you change them.
