Default A/C Refrigerent - Cost & Type

First, thanks for those helped on my earlier post. My A/C is working fine now, it was just low on refrigerent.

BUT.... 3 quick questions for you!

1) It cost $100.00 to add refrigerent! How expensive is this stuff!?

2) What type of refirgerent do I have in a 98 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4?

3) I don't have a leak, so how did the refrigerent get low? Is it normal for the A/C to loose a little refrigerent over time (after all my truck is almost 8 years old)!

when you take it to someone you are also paying for their time to put this in your system as well.. my 2000 ram takes about 6 cans of the 134a and that runs about 5-8 dollars a can depending on where you get it. you also need the connectors so you can put this in. it is a very easy procedure, just buy a ram shop manual, and you should be gold as far as doing this yourself. the connector ran me 18 dollars at autozone, and 8 dollars a can that had the recharge oil, and stop leak in it already.
but keep in mind when you take it to a mech, you are paying for their time and their service to do this to your car. way cheaper to do this on your own, and not hard at all.
