Default Is the steering shaft supposed to have play at all?

My steering shaft not only clicks when I turn it by hand under the hood but the U-Joints look SUPER OLD and when I turn it, it moves the steering wheel about half way, is it even supposed to move it at all? Also, is that shaft for 1500,2500,3500 the same? And is the Shaft for OFF-ROAD (2"lift) and NON-OFF ROAD the same? I am talking about the steering column shaft?

now is it the shaft or the bushings giving it the play? the new shaft wont fix the problem if its the bushings.

grab it where the shaft exits the firewall, and move it around....if theres play, the bushings are bad, which is a common problem.....my bushings are shot and i have about 3/4in of play all the way around.

The bushing you would be referring to would be that ROCK SOLID STEERING that everyone replaces it with, right?
