I ordered new rings and rod bearings, they already showed up yesterday (Summits warehouse is NV is next day ground shipping to me).

Anybody know a secret to getting all the carbon off the pistons? It is pretty baked on there. maybe a scotchbrite scuff pad? I thought about breaking one of my old rings to scrape in the ring lands but...

And all of my pets have been spayed / neutered.

Oh and I popped the main caps off (one at a time, the engine is still mounted in the truck) and they look serviceable, what is the average life of a plain bearing?

Carbon can be a bear to remove. Try using a blade to scrape it off or even oven cleaner. If using oven cleaner, be sure to do this in a well ventilated area and let it soak for a while.

hmmm, never thought of that. Im mixing some now. This may also be the solution to everyone fuel economy threads. just run napalm instead of $4 for a gallon of gas. easier than HHO. I bet with a TB spacer I can get 1000 miles to the gallon!

you shouldnt be asking yourself how much more life the bearings and rings have in them. 200,000 miles was plenty of service for them. spend $100 and replace the bearings and rings, SINCE IT IS DISASSEMBLED!

so you have a bare block in your truck right now? might be easier if you took it out...

yes, the only thing in the truck right now is the bare block and crank. Since it started as only a top end job, block is still in there. although the project has kinda escalated. I was planning on just leaving the mains since they are serviceable. Just wondered what the average life span was. and my engine stand is occupied with 454 right now for a friends Jeep...
