Default need help alternator question

i need to replace the alternator in my 1996 dodge ram 1500 truck but i got a few questions like first of all how can you find out what ampage alternator is this the number that is mine : TN12000-0470 AND 90HS PLUS IN BIG NUMBERS 8647 so i am wondering is it a 90 AMP because it say 90 hs is that what it means? and i am wondering will it be a bad idea to replace it with a 120 amp if it is a 90 AMP

not a bad idea to go with a 120 amp at all. It will not do anything bad. It will just make you able to run more "extras" like a MSD igntion, electric fans and a stereo system.

BTW, I put a 90 amp in my 1996 when my stock one went. It worked fine and I was running a MSD ignition box with it. So 90 amps is good enough for stock.

It's never a bad idea to go to a larger capacity alternator. Check with your local auto parts store for choices and prices for your year/model and if the larger capacity isn't much more, go for it.

Nice lookin' truck, btw...

Cool Thanks

thanks for all the info and i am seriously thinking about going with the 120 amp, if it is not much more in price than the 90 amp, exspecially since i have the extra lights on the back as you can tell from my pic going to go price them today i will post later on what i end up getting and if i find out what the numbers where it may come use ful to some one else that had same problem as me hopefully!

Check and see if the main wire from alt. to battery is a different for the bigger alt.
It may need to be bigger to make sure it has the capacity to handle more current if called for.
I know they use higher rated fuses in the power distribution center.
