transmission problems
I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4x2 with a 5.2 motor. Ok my problem is it is not shifting it is automatic, before this happened I pressed the O/D off switch and since then it gets stuck its not shifting from first to second gear, if please any one knows how to fix this or has any knowledge and may help me solve this I would really appreciate it. I am just hoping its not the transmission. THANX to all...
It's the Dreaded 47RE was an absolute POS. Thats whats in my 5.9L dodge and its doing it 2-3 not 1-2 (but my dads cummins was doing that) ive heard anything from Springs inside the transmissions - Seals inside there but theres no way around it. (either Rebuild or Different Transmission). Dad put a Jasper in his about 3 months Ago (it works PERFECT) and i got my Transmission to do over the summer.
there was never a 47RE bolted to a magnum engine.. I don't even think you can adapt at 47RE to a magnum..
I was mobile earlier and should have waited to later to complete the thought, but:
the 46RE that is behind your 5.2 is most likely suffering from a bad solenoid or speed sensor.. these things happen all the time with this tranny.. If you can get in your truck, start it up, drop the lever to first and it actually goes to first- build speed/RPM, and shift it manually to second and it goes to second, build more speed/RPM and shift into Drive and it does so without issue, it is most likely the pressure solenoid..
if this is the case, drop your pan and replace both the speed sensor and the pressure solenoid... they are side by side, and there is no sense in not doing both if you're going in there anyway. Buy your replacement parts from a DEALER.. the aftermarket/rebuilt ones have a bad rep of blowing out quickly, or being bad out of the box.
the job is a simple albeit messy one. just drop the pan, the filter, and follow the wiring harness to the sensors.. IIRC they are at around 1 o'clock if the front of your truck is 12 o'clock.. replace them, button it up, replace fluid (AT+4 only), NEW FILTER (may as well)..
you'll need a star-nut screw driver set to remove the plate.. IIRC it is a #2.. that is the only thing close to special tool needed. Don't over torque the pan putting it back on..
the entire job will take about two hours.. that's 1/2 an hour to do teh work, and an hour and a half for clean-up depending on how particular you are about your tools and such..
before you go off and do this, make sure the procedures I wrote are followed to determine if that is likely the cause, before you drop the chaching..
