Front Axle Leak
Hello,
I'm new here, and I have a question. My 99 Ram 1500 Sport 4x4 has developed a leak from the front axle. Between the front differential and the passenger side hub, there is a sensor??? I have no idea what it is, I am thinking it might be an ABS axle speed sensor or something. I can try to post a picture tomorrow of the part in question. It looks like it is leaking axle lube from a gasket where the cover attaches. Can someone help me ID this part so that I know what to ask for when I go the parts counter to get a new gasket? Also does anyone know if a bunch of STUFF (techincal term) will fall out once the cover is removed to replace the gasket?
THANKS for any advice,

Sounds like you're describing the CAD (central axle disconnect) housing. It's what connects the stub axle to the inner axle when you put your truck into 4 wheel drive. Nothing should fall out when you pull the cover off, but some more fluid might leak out. For that reason, now might be a good time to change the front differential/axle fluid
Also, when putting the CAD unit back in, you have to make sure you line up the "fork" with the collar, so your 4wd will engage/dis-engange correctly. You'll see what I mean once you have it off.
And as a side note, you wouldn't really need to put a new gasket in there. I sealed mine with RTV when I changed my front axle seals. Works just as well
