Default Smokes on startup

I have a '99 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 quad cab and when it is not warmed up yet or when it sits for over an hour it smokes on startup, burns oil. It has 76,000 miles. When it sits for about six hours it makes a cloud, maybe, the size of a couple beach ***** (best example i can come up with), then dies down and burns a little for a couple seconds and then completely disappears. Is this somewhat normal? Should i get the valve seals replaced, and if so how much do you think that would cost? Also, do any of those addatives work, like drygas (I know that it removes moisture, but does it really clean the injectors and stuff)? Also i would like to get an exhaust system, not going to do a cam upgrade or anything like that, so i am just going to go with a single in dual out muffler? I want a flowmaster, i was looking at the American Thunder system, but it seems like those only come with 50 series mufflers. What exhaust do you recommend???

Thanks

Sounds like valve seals. I don't the cost on having them replaced, been out the mechanic bussiness too long. I have the american thunder on my 96 1500 with the 318 and like it very well.[sm=patriot.gif]

I agree, it sounds like valve seals to me. the plenum gasket can be leaky but it wouldnt do that at startup. I have the dual out flowmaster kit, not sure what they call it but I like it alot. the only thing I'd recommend is to get the dual outs setup to 2.25" out instead of the 2.5". this will help you to keep your low end torque.

if you get the dual out kit, put it on and take it for a spin... you'll see what I mean about loosing the low end. then take it to a muffler shop and have them neck down the outputs to the 2.25" outs. and you'll see your low end come back.
