Been looking at the forums and others e-fan mods, and I am still not sure which to go with. Im driving a 1996 Ram v8 5.2L 1/2ton 2WD with the Y vin. Been contemplating these three:

Flex-a-lite 210R (400$)

Im thinking the FFDynamics because of price, but the TCP would make the fabrication job minimal and looks really nice. Anyone got any suggestions??

RM-INDY has got me gearing my truck like crazy. I curse the day I found his website and realized how much I love my truck.

 

According to Summit, they no longer make that fan. The substitute listed is the 410. BTW, that 2500 CFM is not a "per fan" rating, so you can't double it. Its the rating for BOTH fans at the same time. Definitely not enough to cool our truck's V8s.

The only Flex-a-Lite fan I've found that works OK for our trucks is the Black Magic Extreme 180. Best place to get one if you want it is Moe's Performance. I also have one for sale if you're interested.

Good fans, bad setup. Strapping anything that heavy to the radiator will cause issues in the long run. Those fans are heavy, give it a few years of bumps and even just normal road use, and you'll be buying a new radiator (or at least have a bit of damage).

Good setup, decent air flow. A touch on the expensive side, but simple and easy.

I contacted TCP and bought just the aluminum shroud from them, since their 2000 CFM fans were not high enough for my liking. No problem, they shipped me one without fans and without the adjustable thermostat.

Then I bought two of the FFD165 fans. They were having a sale on them at the time, got them for $105 or something per unit instead of $160.

Drilled holes into the aluminum shroud for the fans, bolted them in, hooked up my existing adjustable thermostat (used it with my previous electric fan setup), and there we are.

Tell me about it. Never ending ideas for upgrades, wife is always complaining about how much I want to spend on the truck.

 

I run the Taurus/Mark VIII fan. Easy install. All you gotta do is cut two flat pieces of aluminum, bolt it underneath your stock fan shroud and bolt it to the fan. Fan kicks on low at 185 and high at 195. My kit only cost me $100 with both sensors and the fan was $110 from rock auto bran new. If you want the links just PM me.

 

I agree on the Flex-a-Lite 180 Extreme, I've had one in for five years and have never gone an iota past 1/3 the way up with the needle (180* thermostat installed).

Lot of guys do the Taurus/Mark VII fan and they work fine. Was a tad low on the CFM for me at around 2600 (the 180 Extreme is 3300) and the amp draw is a bit high on them when compared to the Flex-a-Light, but most people run 'em for years with no issues.

Although I gotta admit Jason's setup is just out-right BAD A$$!

As much as I hate to say it, watch out ordering from Moe's. Bob used to be great but he's had some personal issues in the past that's effected product delivery and customer service. He did rectify it for a time and promised to do better, but lately, he's seemed to slip down that black hole again. Shame too, cause for years it was tough to beat the prices AND customer service you got from Moe's Performance...

 

Is there any way you can take a picture of your set up I'm just looking for ideas. My dad and I were just talking about this yesterday. I have a 18 inch fan off a v8 Lincoln but don't know how many cfms it flows I am just going to put it on and try it.

 

Even with 180 thermostat installed, mine would hit 195 during a hot summer day with the A/C on full blast. If the A/C didn't turn on, it was down in the 180-185 range. Fine for most people, not for picky me, hence why I upgraded to this setup.

Every once in a while you get someone on here who burn up alternators with those fans, though. "A bit high" is an understatement, I think. Someone posted actual test results on here once about how many amps that fun pulled at startup and full load, and it was pretty damned high. Thats the reason I elected not to do it. Not saying it is guaranteed to kill your alt, but your results may vary.

Thanks. The FF Dynamics fans are even quieter than the Flex-a-Lite, and there are two of them. Sometimes the Flex-a-Lite would "screech" very slightly on startup, especially when cold. These don't do that, and holy buckets do they put out some air.

Here is what I got so far, everyone please feel free to chime in

1) Aluminum Shrouding from TCP Performance

2) 2 FFD165 fans
(hope I can get in Ram Red, Want 6000cfm +)

3) Spal PWM Ver3 Controller
(seems common will it handle 2 FFD165 fans?)

4) Relay kit
(need help finding or may get from TCP)

Wish I could man, but currently Im residing in Afghani Land and the truck is sitting in storage in NY. All I did was cut two pieces of flat aluminum, about .040in thick. Drilled holes and bolted the fan to one side and bolted the other side underneath my stock radiator shroud with the mounting bolts. Do the same to the other side.

I admit the Mark VIII fan will pull some voltage, but if you wire it right, it will only kick on the low side during day to day driving. My truck came with the high output alternator stock so that helps. But honestly, the only time it kicks on high is pulling a trailer during the summer. Another plus side is, if my fan decides to burn up, I can get another over-nighted to me from rock auto. Not so much with the custom setups.

 

oh i had forgotten you were not at home. I just need to get some ideas for my set-up I will not be doing it any time soon. Just graduated from high school and from electrical school and looking for a job so I can put some money into my truck.

 

ya i ran a markv111 fan pulled a ton of power, i didnt have a tran temp gauge at the time, it always was on my mine if the fan was going to come on and if my trans was staying cool, i also had a by pass switch so i turn it on if the adjustable thermostat didnt kick it on,, also used the switch when i would turn the a/c
