Default transfer case help

hello i got a 1997 dodge ram slt single cab with the 6 foot cab with the 5.9 engine. everything is fine tranny shifts fine and smooth no problems. but when i go to put the transfer case in 4wd it'll go to 4wd drive n/p well at least i think it actually shifts into it because the light on the dashboard doesn't light up. so when i shift the case into neutral its fine then when i shift the case into 4 low the transfer case grinds like crazy and wont let me **** into 4 low then if i try to shift back up it'll grind again. i have to shut the truck off and **** it back to 2wd and its fine again. i have no idea what this can be please help me thanks for reading. by the way before i mess with the transfer case i always put the tranny in neutral.

Do you shift your transmission into Neutral before you shift into 4LO? That usually helps.

When my truck was stock it would do that with my 231. Dont stop or go slow going into four wheel drive. Dont be scared to throw that shifter in gear. Being a 97 it has some miles and wear on it prob. wouldnt hurt to go through it sometime.

That's normal if you stop moving the handle at neutral. Throw it all the way to 4 low quickly without stopping in neutral. For 4 low you stop the truck first also. For 4 H you can be moving.
