Rear was very tight when I did the factory specified amount. The entire arm the piston drives down would barely move. I did check it before I adjusted and that arm moved quite a bit. I did loosen up the rear band even more than the FSM stated, but not as loose as it originally was. Retyped to check the apply lever right next to the adjustment screw toward the drivers side to watch for about 1/4" of travel and buttoned it up. It's shifting fine so far, but I would love to know the margin for error inn the adjustment. 1/4"-1/2" seems very ambiguous compared to 2-1 7/8 turns.
I'd rather roast tires than trannies. |
My mind is not working. I think that adj screw may be 16 tpi - have to count to see how much that backs off, but 72 in pds is pretty snug when you figure the leverage of the arm.

2 7/8 tuns would be about 0.3359". Don't see any way it could be a 1/2" freeplay, and 1/4" may be close. This is assuming that screw is a 3/8 x 16.

.25" is a quarter inch so .3359" is right there between .25" and .5" if your figuring is correct on those threads.
The rear band was simply too tight adjusted the way the FSM suggested, theres no way the accumulator would have been able to build pressure to engage the band as tight as it was. |
I am going to roll mine back over tomorrow and pull the pan and recheck. Won't be able to reinstall transmission for a week or two anyway, so I may as well make sure the band is about right. Seems FSM "number of turns" is a loose variable.

the band adjustment is pretty forgiving. Dont over think it. If its shifting late, thats in the cable and throttle valve.
