Default 3rd gen rims on 2 gen?

Will 3rd generation 17" Ram 1500 rims fit on a 2nd generation? I have a 99 Ram 1500 4x4, want to put 2004-06 17" stock rims on it. Is the lug pattern the same and is there room? Also what size tires could I put on them? I currently have stock 16" rims with p265/75/r16 on it.
Thanks!

Def. will fit just fine.
Might be able to fit 285's on it. You can def. put the 285's on the back if you wanted.

I had a wheel fall off (a reputable shop put it on because i needed them balanced). The lugs are 9/16ths on third gens and 1/2 on ours

The bolt pattern is the same but the stud holes are for 9/16th lugs. Many people run the stock lugs and do not have issues.
I am going to try and run a set of cone shank style lug nuts so I have more gripping area on the stud. Plus the shank fills most of the larger stud hole.
