Default 1996 Ram 5.9 overheatingI have a 1996 Dodge 1500 with a 5.9 liter gas engine.

I have a 1996 Dodge 1500 with a 5.9 liter gas engine. It is running a little hot while driving. I have replaced the thermostat, flushed the engine and replaced the radiator. It is still running at about 215 to 220. When I stop the engine it over heats and fills up the overflow. It seems to run at normal heat when I have the heater on high but no hot air is coming out of the vents.

The water pump is working fine.

Any suggestions?

Your t-stat could be a problem even though you replaced it, could have been bad outta the box.
You might also have a blockage in your heater core.

Welcome to DF. Happy wrenching! (such a thing exists???)

How do you know the water pump is fine? (anyone know where that pic is that got posted recently, with the bad impeller?) And +1 on the thermostat, what brand did you put in and did you test it first? Also, have you checked the fan clutch?

Yes I checked the t-stat (pan of boiling water) and water pump is working. Have not checked the fan clutch yet. Will check that today. Thanks

Don't rule out the head gasket. A competent radiator shop can check the coolant for the presence of carbon gasses in the coolant. Well worth what they charge (for me it was $20).

+1..... You should also make sure the system is burped properly. Raise the right front of the truck up and follow this DIY. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...nt-system.html

You might also consider checking or just getting a new radiator cap. 16 psi is what it should be.

Thanks guys for the info. I have decided to take it to a professional for them to tell me what is wrong with it but I plan on doing the work myself.
