Transmission oil cooler
I bought a trans oil cooler today Imperial High Performance Transmission Oil Cooler Part No. 240516 from advance auto parts today looking for some pointers for installation. Around tax time i am looking to move from florida to oklahoma will be towing my chevy cobalt on a car dolly packed with stuff as well as loading my 6 ft bed down (aprox 6000lbs max). I want to install it where it feeds into the stock cooler out into the external then back to the transmission but i seen some post about putting a thermostatic bypass valve so that the does not get too cool.
long story short is the external trans cooler a good idea? What is the best mounting spot? how to route the lines so that the trans fluid goes in the stock cooler out to the external and back to the trans/ or from trans to external into stock cooler and to trans? Oklahoma with snow should i have a thermostatic bypass valve on it?

external cooler is an excellent idea.
also - remove the check valve on the pressure line.
route the pressure hose (hot) to the radiator/stock cooler first, then the aux cooler, and then return to the trans.
mount the cooler on the front of the AC condenser.
forget the themo valve.
be sure and use auto transmission hose. its about $3/ft at parts stores.
hold on and i'll find a pic.

why remove the check valve on the pressure line? and will it hurt if i do or dont? this is my DD and dont want to mess it up lol. Next question stupid one but which trans line is the hot one, the one on bottom with the quick disconnect or top one?
check valve is prone to clog up with normal debris and sludge, which leads to overheating, which leads to transmission failure.
the only purpose of the check valve is to prevent oil drainback, which - worst case can require you to sit a moment while the systems reprimes. i've only had that happen once in 5 years.
hot line is the bottom one. the check valve is at the frame rail in the hard line. its very small, only about 1 inch long and threaded in. i cut mine off with a tubing cutter, slipped the hose over the hardline and clamped it on. cost nothing, took 5 minutes.
