Those little things, as unreg once said, are like little trash cans and pick up all the lil debris floating around in your oil.. the passage/port is tiny.. something could be sucked in one but not allowed to pass out.. it could also impede the stroke by
jamming the piston/dome...

I've never tried it, but... You can pull the rocker, the rod, and get a long snout compressor fitting, and lay it into the dome vent.. you can attempt to blow the debris out of it while the lifters is relaxed and not charged... maybe it will work, I dunno, because I've never tried it.. its worthy of a shot..

If you care to search for a thread titled "huge pisses, what would you do?" Or something to that effect, you can see my learning curve with lifters..

Drewactual - Read all 13 pages. What a story! Glad the lifters wotked out for you. I admit you have a bunch of crap on those lifters. I looked at mine when I replaced the heads they looked relatively clean. Maybe I knocked some junk in there, I don't know. I'm going to let it run a few more weeks and then swap out the lifters. Not that I want to dump another $150 on lifters and gaskets, but I really can't live with the ticking. I'm learning a lot about my truck and how the internals work, and in the end I just like wrenching.....

Going to swap the lifters this weekend. In the manual it says to pull the lifters with tool C-4129-A Hydraulic Tappet remover. Is this a needed tool or are there other ways to get them out. Maybe rotate the engine and grab the lifters that come up out of their guides? How have you guys done it?

I would not suggest rotating engine. I have pulled many a lifter over many a year - and been successful with a pick with a 90 degree bend at the en. Yuo can hook it inside the li at the top of the lifter if there is one. I have NOT pulled a lifter from a Magnum engine - nor seen one, so I don't know for sure if this will work, just apossibility. I have also pulled flat top solid lifters with a small suction cup before,.

You can actually push them from the bottom, where the roller glides on the lobes.. there is enough of them exposed on the top to get a hold of them.. the only ones that are a pita are the corner ones.

The lifter picker tool is the hot ticket. I've used magnets and suction cups... never again.

Thanks for the input. Sorry about all the questions..... In my head things seem logical, but I'm still learning.

Since I just replaced my heads I have gone through most of this process already. If I remove the intake manifold, rockers, rods and spark plugs, there shouldn't be any pressure on the valves. Therefore I should be able to rotate the engine and pull the lifters as they pop up. I don't care about the lifters coming out. I should be able to get a pick or screwdriver under the retaining pin to lift them. Once high enough pliers should finish them from there. I won't have the engine upened up so I can't get to the lobes to push them up

After all are removed I should be able to replace the lifters and follow the steps from the manual to replace the rockers like I did last time.

INSTALLATION
(1) Rotate the crankshaft until the “V8” mark lines
up with the TDC mark on the timing chain case
cover. This mark is located 147° ATDC from the No.1
firing position.
(2) Install the push rods in the same order as
removed.
(3) Install rocker arm and pivot assemblies in the
same order as removed. Tighten the rocker arm bolts
to 28 N·m (21 ft. lbs.) torque.

Please correct me if I'm missing something.

Don't worry about rotating the motor. As long as you leave the TC and distributor alone.
