Yea, the Jeep 5.9 has more HP and torque then the Dodge version, it sits at 245hp and 350 lbs of torque, it uses a different cam shaft and has a higher compression number what it is i dont know, i do know the 5.9's from i think 01 and up for dodge use the "newer" cam shaft from the Jeep motor tho. It says in the manual and the gas cap to use Supreme in big warning letters.

I dont know how old the wires and stuff are. I have only had it for 14 months, but i assume the cap and rotor and coil are original. The wires i dunno, and i dont know how old the spark plugs are but they look good i think.

Cant do the plenum until spring next year. No way around that. I've spent a couple thousand at least repairing other things on this thing. Its funny too because it had only 118k on it and the Dealership said it was in good condition and has zero rust underneeth. But shortly after owning it all kinds of problems started. This knocking is recent. I'll read up on the plenum thing and get prepared for it tho.

Btw zman, i mean no disrespect but you are the one who blew me off in the first place by saying what you said. I was only telling you that im not masking anything purposly.. my engine requires Supreme per the big yellow sticker on the gas door and the manual. I didnt put it in there to mask a problem which is what you were insinuating. . Look it up if you dont believe me, if the plenum is bad well that sucks because i dont want a blown piston or all the other crap it can cause. I just wanted opinions

I wonder this i noticed this only a couple months ago. Could this also be because of my cold air intake ? I made it into a sorta ram air scoop through the front grill, i did this a few months ago. I wonder if this has anything to do with it. ill try putting the stock box back on .. I'll put in BP gasoline and see if its maybe the cheap sheetz gas thats doing it. Oh well cant hurt to try since i cant do the plenum right now

Well zman can come off a little "strong" at times but, usually he just calls it as he see's it.

I've got a bad plenum at the moment myself, and under load or heavy acceleration I will experience what I believe is "valve rattle", just about same thing in the 2nd video you posted.

The plenum problems comes up A LOT here on DF, and the problems you described fit a blown plenum pretty well to the "T"

Edit: Whenever you do replace the plenum gasket & pan you can just replace that and only that. It's just recommended that while your in there you replace stuff like the timing chain and gears, water pump, stuff that you have to take off or are near like the timing chain and gears.

IMHO, stay away from Sheetz gas, it's garbage. My wife has a 2012 civic that with the million computers on it, it also keeps track of the mpg. She'll get gas at sheetz if necessary but that's it. Her mpg's will drop from 40ish to 35-37. That's taking the same route, driving the same way (grandma-ish), and probably most importantly, NOT letting me behind the wheel. Also, I haven't tracked it but I can tell there is a mpg drop in my ram with there fuel.

I can agree with that. A while back I was stuck in an old '88 Ford Escort Pinto Bean and it REFUSED to run well on Murphy's USA (Wal-Mart). I had to run Shell in it, regular 87.

I then optioned to use Shell gasoline in the '98 Chevy K1500 I had and it really liked it. I used regular 87 too.

Generally I use Murphy's in the Ram just because it's the only gas station in town that you don't have to prepay for, and I hate having to prepay when I've NO CLUE what it will ACTUALLY take to fill it up.

Edit: I have used several different gasoline's in the Ram, and so far it doesn't care for any in particular - thank god!

We usually try to get gas at Get Go. That way we can save a bit on the groceries also. Haven't had any problems with them, Shell, Marathon, most BP's. Got bad gas once at Speedway with the camaro I had. Haven't get fuel there since.

Cheap gas makes my 5.9 Ram ping. Made it ping before plenum repair, makes it ping after plenum repair. Mine didn't ping before I replaced the plenum gasket too bad. Never sounded like "marbles in a can", more like an electric fence grounding out on a wet weed (maybe no one knows what the hell I'm talking about here, and I can live with that). Cheap gas and/or old plugs have always been the issue for me. Since you said you were using cheap gas when you first posted, that is where I'd start. Not saying adressing the plenum isn't a good idea or that you won't be addressing it in the future.

Well i have noticed a drop in MPG using sheetz went from like 13.5 to around 12.6mpg its jsut that they are so damn cheap compared to other stations for 93 anyway the 87 is the same. The BP down the street is 3.64 for 93 the sheetz is 3.42, but ill toss a tank of BP in instead.

I just took my spark plugs out to check them out, number 6-8 were a little oily not on the node or arch but the ring and threads altho my valve covers are leaking in the back on both sides so i had oil on the threads and the metal washer. Anyway i checked the gap on the plugs they were all wierd gaps. One was almost .50 others were .45 and .47 ect. They are suppose to be .40 for my engine, so i gaped em right. Looked down in the cylinder with a flashlight and the pistons all look grimy, basicly black

I dunno if that will affect anything tho lol.

So if i were to buy that hughes plenum plate and gasket, how hard is it to remove the intake manifold ?

Stewie Oh and as for replacing other stuff, I have already replaced the timing cover gasket, the water pump, the timing chain and gears 3 months ago so all of that is done actually because it all started to leak out of blown seals. I dont have to take all that off to remove the plenum do I, doesnt look like it but the way you wrote that almost sounds like it lol.

Remove AC comp, alternator, t stat housing, and disconnect throttle body cables, vacuum hoses, and connectors. Remove fuel rail and injector connectors. Something like 12 bolts for intake. Not too difficult, just work bolts slow so you don't break them off.

Since you already did timing set and water pump, you should be good there.

K sounds easy enough, just gatta get the kit, and a torque wrench because i assume these are bolts that need to be torqued correctly.

Where is the link to the faq writeup i dont see it under faqs
