i wonder how the heck your truck is even running with such a low idle speed. my 81 with a 195* stat runs at a pretty steady 200*

The 195 degree thermostat was spec'd at the factory to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. Unless/until you throw an aggressive ignition timing curve into the mix, you've no need of a 180 degree thermostat.

The thermostat, though, doesn't explain the low idle speed. Have you tried cleaning your IAC?

Seems to me if it is richining the fuel mix, it may make more power, but gas milage is going down.

Anyway, I don't know where my gauge coincides with the actual temp, but it definately is running Much cooler with the 180* Stat.
With the 195* Stat it ran perfect and gas milage was a couple mpg better.
Use to idle at 600-650 rpm, now it idles at about 400 rpm and a slight miss at idle once in awhile.

This is the temp difference, notice where the arrow is, that was where it ran with the 195* Stat.

With my stock 195* Tstat, my engine temp stays just pretty much where your's is in that picture, which is probably, what in between 180-190*?

180 stat will also save your cylinder heads from cracking which there known for doing and is the number 1 cause of this cracking. Heads where not designed for that much heat hence the cracking problems. Number two cause for the cracking was/is engine ping. Beats the crap out of the valves and seats.

I thought it was pretty much known that the cracking heads that magnums have is due to very poor casting designs.

Yes thin castings with induction hardened valve seats which doesnt hold up very good when subjected to the higher temps of a 195 stat. Any thin casting be it cylinder bores, heads ect or what have you doesnt take the higher heat very well and will crack in short time if subjected to the higher temps. Mix in engine ping(which is very well known issue with magnum motors) and your replacing cylinder head if not addressed.

I install a 180 few months back and I gained 2.5mpg in my big ram. Up from 10 in the city to 12.5mpg in a 2500.

My *** dyno also felt a power increase from the switch along with a smoother running truck.

Like the fact dont have to worry about the heads cracking because of the 195 plus my trans runs much cooler because the cooler is in the rad.
