Thanks, I'll look it up in the FSM and pull the crank sensor before we start.

Well, the tranny swap is on hold for now. My buddy ran out if cash and can't get the one from the junk....I mean salvage yard til next week. We may pull the bad one out tomorrow afternoon and let the truck sit til next weekend. I've got another question...he told me that the day before it broke he was playing with the OD switch while driving at 70 mph. He would turn it off for a mile then turn it on for a mile to see the difference in rpm. Said he did that a few times. Could that have led to the OD snap ring breaking the next day? Are the 46re tranny's really that bad? Just wondering.

They're not that bad. If the snap ring broke it was fixin' to go anyway and he just knocked the last week or so off the end.

Try replacing the shift sensor. The same thing was happening to my 2000 Dodge. What it sounds like to me is its stuck in a higher gear, so it requires a lot more power to get it moving. Mine was struck in 3rd gear, your friends may be higher.

The sensor is located just under the trans. Take off the pan and it will be right there. About $100.
Similar issue, similar fix. I'd give it a go.

Thanks, UnregisteredUser, I was kinda thinking the same thing. Him playing with it just pushed it over the edge, it does have 227k miles on it.

Bdennn, I found a 3.5 inch long piece of ring in the pan when I dropped it the other day, so its physically broken.

Wow. That's an unusually long run for a 46R in a Ram. It deserves a pat on the head and to be told it done good.

Well, after 4 hours and one bloody knuckle the trans is out!

HeyYou, thanks for telling me about the Crank sensor, I never would have known about that. But you could have told me how hard it is to find and get to...lol, it took me about an hour just to find and remove it.

I've attached a pic of the back of the intake. There is a hole on the right side, next to the distributor. It looks like it has threads and like something is supposed to be in there, but it was empty. Can anyone tell me what this hole is for and if I'm missing something? Also, it looks like this truck had an engine transplant at some point because there's yellow junkyard marking numbers all over it....on the block, the exhaust manifold, the fly wheel...everywhere. So, I'm wondering if maybe there was a sensor of some sort in whatever vehicle the engine came out of. Any ideas??
