Default Transfer case questions

I noticed a transmission leak under my truck. Closer inspection I see that the transfer case is leaking just a little bit of transmission fluid, enough to make a 6 inch circle at night. The leak appears to be around the gasket. I dont know much about transfer cases so I asked a buddy if I could just throw it on a lift rip it off, unbolt it and replace the gasket. He looked at me and said good luck....and said that (some) transfer cases have springs and crap that would pop off. Is this true for Dodge's? I don't have a problem taking the time to remove it...better then losing transmission fluid every day

$833 with a $200 core for a new one

Its easy. If your talking about the split seal you just have to take off the nuts that hold it together, clean it off real good and put a good 1 inch bead all the way around. Torque the nuts down and through it back up there. Drain the fluid before you drop it. 5.9 2001 1500.

Okay, I've attached a couple picture to make sure we are talking about the right seal. If we are, the only fluid that will drain out is the transmission fluid - right?

Is there a drain plug or just unbolt it like i'm dropping a transmission pan

Dude your transfer is fine. The seal that is leaking is where your tranny and transfer bolt up together. unbolt it, drop the transfer, clean off both surfaces real good, then throw a 1 inch bead of silicone on both the tranny and transfer. You will have fluid come out the transfer and tranny when you drop it. They use the same fluid. You can drop it like it is but you will make a little bit of a mess. Just make sure you fill up your fluids when your done. but yeah, your transfer is fine. Its just the seal where they hook up. The nuts on top of the transfer are a pain to take off. Make sure you torque them down. 1500 4x4 5.9 2001 monster
