when to change fluids?
I have already asked similar questions, but... I just bought a '99 Dodge Ram QC 4x4 5.9 about a month ago, i just changed the engine oil. I do not know when the other fluids have been replaced. The truck has 76,000 miles on it. I looked at the Transmission dipstick and the fluid was not discolored or anything, looked perfect, so does that mean it has been changed not too long ago? Doesn't oil usually get discolored when it gets old, or around when it needs to be changed? Also, the only reason i am hesitating on changing the trans fluid is because of the band adjustment, if i change it i would like them to be adjusted, i could probably do it my self, but am just worried that i will screw up somehow, How do you know if they need to be adjusted, do they even need to be adjusted at every fluid change? How much would it cost to have the daelership do it? Also, the trasnfer case, is there just an easy to get to drain plug? Haven't really looked at it. I know that there are alot of questions, that is because i have a couple days off from work and would like to get these things done.
Thanks

First, as a rule of thumb, I ALWAYS change ALL the fluids whenever I buy used. A little costly, but at least I have the piece of mind that the fluids are new. I cant answer the question about the tranny band adjustment, but I have researched alot about this generation myself, and changing the tranny fluid regularly is the key to long life. Also, at 70K+ miles, I would get my radiator flushed if I were you. Have them check all rubber hoses. Regular fluid changes of ALL compartments is the key element to long life obviously, and I would do it regardless if you think it was done or not. I am researching about the tranny band adjustment myself. Interesting question! Good luck
