for best mpg - fix plenum, cat, replace timing chain, tune up, replace o2 sensors, modest all terrain tires to 265 or 285 max, avoid mudders, avoid lift. mild tune and drive like grandma. don't expect more than 15-16 mpg.
+1 very well said...

your averaging the norm for your setup.... there are no real magic mods to get results... you coulds always grind the air horns off of the throttle body, that helps boost airflow and performance at the cost of slightly louder air intake....or buy a bored out 50mm one...I have a CAI and honestly I noticed no real improvement over the 14x3 round one the PO had on it except its not as loud.
some people claim to gain 2-3 mpg in the jeep forums with the 5.2 and bosch "703" injectors which are the newer style and spray a better atomized pattern instead of a jet of fuel...you need to have the fuel sync readjusted afterwards...I just did this mod myself but the truck has been out of commision with a cracked pacesetter header and a misfire to fix so I cant comment on results yet. and you might have gotten better mpg's by going with 4.10 gears which are closer to stock ratio for your tire size...

Also, if you are city driving, take your truck out of OD. I get to 40 MPH in only a half mile of my 3.5 mile commute. THe rest is avoiding pedestrians, stoplights/signs and getting stuck behind buses.

I switched to taking OD off and I gained .8 MPG over the course of a week.
