So I was driving to work today, and I started to smell burning rubber.
Didn't really care for it.
But thing the back of my radio started to smoke, and the back of it was really HOT. But now, my radio is fried.


What would be a cause of this?
The wires were all hooked up to color. 1 color was mismatched "Orange>Orange/w white stripe"

2 wires weren't connected, but was taped.

1 Blue
1 Black

There was 2 black wires, one running to another black for the ground, and another one was taped off.

Everything was working fine until now.. weird..
Any suggestions?

 

The previous owner obv half assed the install. I would download the service manual and make sure you wire the new radio correctly

there wasnt any subwoofers running off the stereo without an amp was there? that will overheat and fry the stereo's amp.(Its a big no no to do this)... so can piggybacking multiple speakers on one channel depending on the ohms load of the speakers..

The orange and white wire goes to the dimmer control for lights to dim the stereo when the lights are turned on the blue is a remote wire to kick on an optional amp... black wires are always ground...

 

Their is no subwoofer installed in the truck.

Their is just the 4 stock speakers. 2 in front 2 in back.

I'm still confused why their is 2 black wires.

1 leads to another connector that clips into a slot.
The other black one is just dangling around with tape.

 

wire should have labels or be labeled or have a sticker on the stereo saying what each is for...I'm gonna guess one is meant to ground to the frame and the other is for battery ground...

 

Got one more for y'all.

Just took out a few fuses

Yellow-Cig lighter
Blue-Buzzer
Red-Radio

The blue and red don't look broken, but they sure as heck look burnt. Think they're still good? or replace

Also, how would I ground a wire out to the frame?

 

anywhere to the frame or metal part of the dash should be good...
those fuses look like they had too much current draw or being pulled through them..either theres a poor connection feeding power or maybe one of your speakers is blown and shorting causing the amp in the stereo to overheat? I'm just guessing of course, not being there... you could also have a pinched and shorting wire but you should hear this in the speaker...

 

black with green from the stereo ground to the driver side fender by the hood hinge.12 volt.com has complete stereo and remote start wiring diagrams if your going to install a aftermarket stereo.

 

he has the ground wire from the stereo harness hooked up already...the stereo apparently has to black wires coming out of it. sometimes the stereos have a ground screw or wire to ground the stereo chassis to the nearby frame.

 

Okay. before I start to do anything.

Here is the picture;




The black wire with the end on it connects to the factory wiring harness, in a slot. ---> Comes from the adapter harness that goes into the factory
The blue wire is taped. ---> Comes from the stereo harness
The other black wire is taped.---> Comes from the stereo harness
Also, I'm trying to figure out where this other connector goes too?

The grey/black go to my factory, but the other one has no slot to go.
The white one is to my stereo

Should I ground the other black wire to the frame?
Could that be a reason it over heated?

Also, is there any color wires I don't need hooked up?
I'm not running any extra speakers / amp / woofer.

I'd like to hear from the pros before looking it up :3
