I am the proud owner of a 2001 1500 4x4 with the 360. I live in florida now but i plan on moving to alabama for school, and i want to change the fluids in the truck before the trip in about 9 days. Has anyone else thought of going with synthetic oils on their truck? If so, what brand did you use? Thanks alot for the help.

 

I switched to synthetic motor oil when my truck hit about 50,000 miles. I use Mobile 1 and I continue to change it every 3000 miles.

 

mobil 1 15w-50 is what I use... put it in at 121K mi w/o any leaks...

 

synthetic is the ony way to go. its qualities are just so far superor the convental oil.

 

I went ahead and did the change today...i went with 10w-30 Royal Purple synthetic with a Fram Tough Guard TG16 filter. Everything seems to be smooth so far, but i havent really done enough driving to make an overall assessment. Have you guys noticed the oil gauge running a lil higher after changing to syn. ? or am i just playing games with my head...? seems under acceleration i hover dead between 40 and 110, and creeping higher.

 

mobil 1 5w40 syn. mopar filter. no leaks at 110k.

 

Mobil 1 10w-30 full syth in every car/truck I own.

No problems with any and I have owned the family car since day 1.

I change it between 3-5k

 

I have never ran synthetic in my truck but have contemplated because I am approaching 75,000 miles.

 

Im curious to the post above. At 75000 miles your too late. Sure I guess its better then never but I think it would have been far better to start this at day 1. I have done a fair bit of research about oil and have worked in the auto industry before joining the USAF. I have come to think this.

1. Most of your damage comes from start up when the oil is sitting in the bottom of the pan cold and unloved.

Well as most auto makers will never do - Design a engine that turns on the oil pump before most of the damage occurs - Let it pre- pressurize (spelling Im sure) the engine with some oil. Hey I'd be happy to wait 5 more seconds if it gave me 2x the engine life. But as you can see having an engine that lasted 2x as long means less sales for the big automakers so you can give that thought up.

2. Change your oil alot. Its cheap. I snapped on a filter mag to the outside of the filter to catch metal particles 2 months ago and I cant wait to cut it open and see if Carcraft is right on recommending it. But anyhow dont be cheap on changing oil.

I guess I could rant all day about things most people know already but I fully think that if your going to go with synthetic oil its a choice best made on your first oil change.

I switched to Castrol 5W30 on my Cavalier when I hit 53,000 only because I was tired of changing the oil every four weeks. The car now has 90,000 on it and it runs sweet. I don't run the A/C and get almost 400 miles out of a tank of gas. Oh, I change the oil every 6,000 miles rather than every 3,000 with dino oil. The reason for 6,000 is because I live on a 1/2 mile long gravel road. Lots of dust.
