Default fuel filter location?

I was reading my haynes manual that i just bought and it looks like it shows a fuel filter mounted near the engine for a 2000.I never really noticed this before. and you have to take off the cap on it with a socket on a hex lug at the center of the cap.I was told my truck had no fuel filter and now the books showing one? Then today someone told me my fuel filter in inside the gas tank.Ill look after work today if i see what the book shows.but if my truck does have this gas filter near the engine where can I buy it?ii ALSO was reading my truck has 2 fuel filters one in the tank and the one located near the engine in a canister and if anyone ever repalced it?just wondering if i should replace it the one mounted near the engine?anyone?

As far as I know, the filter is part of the fuel pump in the tank. Whether it can be replaced without changing the pump, I dont know.

The diesel motors have a canister style filter under the hood but not the gassers. As far as I know the only fuel filter we have (gas motors) is the one that is part of the fuel pump assembly.

Haynes manuals have chapters on both gas and diesel engines. Only fuel filter in a gas engine is part of the fuel pump assembly in the tank.

Well, that's not really true about the gassers. The gold canister on top of the fuel pump outside, is the fuel filter and pressure regulator in one. And can be had at Rock Auto for instance. At any rate, there is NO filter near the TB. Just the screen before the pump inlet and the pressure regulator/filter on top.
