Default 2001 dodge ram 2500 gas tranny questions

Just recently bought a 2001 dodge ram 2500 gasser with 155k. Its in great shape and has no rust. The guy took great care of it. As far as I know it has a 46re transmission in it and thats as far as my knowledge goes. I know alot of people that rebuild transmissions in these and replace them alot. Myne shifts fine and seems to be working 100%. How bad are these transmissions. Should I expect to have to replace it soon or what. Is there a way to prevent tranny failure in these? Is it a matter of if or when?
