Radio, power locks, power windows and dome light doesn't work.

I was putting some speakers in my dads truck about an hour ago. Well the front speakers never worked so we thought there was never any put in in the first place. So i take the door panel off and to my surprise there is a factory 6x9 already in there but it doesnt work.

So now on to my point. I have a test light I wanted to see if it worked so I could see if power is going to the speakers. So I connect the two ends to the harness for the power mirror adjuster. It sparked and radio cut off. Now dome light, mirrors, windows and radio does not work. Checked all fuses and they are still good, no burns or deformations. Well I learned that lesson. Never do that again.

What seems to be the problem here?

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

You positive that all the fuses are good? If somehow you didn't blow a fuse, you may have blown all the bulbs and fried the speakers and the stereo.

My money is on a blown fuse though.

Lesson #1 on doing automotive electrical: Remove the negative cable from the battery.

Update

Got the windows and locks figured out but the mirrors and radio does not work. Just had to plug in harness. :icon_denk:

Positive all the fuses are good. On the side of dash and under hood. Good tip by the way.

there should be one fuse there with a yellow holder ( at least mine was yellow) that you *may* have not checked....its the IOD fuse...check that one, it may be blown...and its on the side of the dash...

if all fuses are good you will want to check for power at the fuse.

+1 on IOD fuse (ignition off draw).

What does the IOD do? Draws power when the ignition is off?

Power is going to fuse. Just checked it.

Mine is silver. The leads look good, no burn marks, but no way to tell if its blown without replacing it.

If you got a ohm meter you can check it.
I've had fuses that looked good but weren't when checked for continuity.

dhvaughan 05-27-2012 08:50 PM

you can test it either of 2 ways -
with fuse removed, check for continuity with ohm-meter.

with fuse installed, check for 12v on both sides of the fuse at the little exposed metal probe points.

All I've got is check lights. I will be getting a meter here pretty soon though.

dhvaughan 05-27-2012 10:31 PM

you can test it with a check light. it will light up with presence of 12 volt.
but - you have to test both sides of the fuse at the probe points.

And do not check for voltage on speaker wires. Useless. Remove speaker wires from speaker and radio and ohm out each wire.

Lights up at the IOD. I would say its just the stereo but the mirrors also dont work. And when you try to turn on the stereo the speakers make a sound like its trying to turn on so I know there is power. But the clock doesnt even work. This beats all I've ever saw.

stereo has two positive power wires... one for memory and such and another that turnas on and off with the ignition.... if you lose one the stereo wont work right and youll have no clock and such... IOD is one of the fuses in in for the 12volts to the radio that is constant for preset memory and clock... I bet you fried that fuse ....

+1 on IOD, pretty much bet it's toast.

zman17 05-29-2012 04:26 PM

There are three fuses with special plastic caps on them. 2 yellow, 1 black.(no silver) It is most likely the black one. Fuse #12 side of dash.
