tranny sometime whines in reverse
1997 2500HD 4x4 auto 5.9
Sometimes when I shift the tranny into reverse I hear a high pitched whine. It has been doing it for serveral years but not had any tranny issues (KOW). Took delivery in OCT 96 and I only have 76000 on her. Any thoughts?

Let me guess, it mostly happens when the trans is cold right?
This is actually considered by many to be a "normal" noise. It is caused from the pressure relief valve occilating in the valve body when pressures are high and fluid is cold. There is a TSB to fix this problem, but from what I have read, it does not seem to fix the noise in all cases. I have seen posts from chrysler service techs that basically explain this as being a bad design flaw of some sort in the transmission, but it is not detrimental to transmission life expectancy or performance, just an annoying side affect of cold fluid and reverse gear pressures.

I have the same noise in reverse but it seems to occur all the time, hot or cold. Took it to a the dealer mechanic and he told me it was normal and a Dodge thing. Knock on wood I haven't had any problems yet. Glad to hear yours is still holding with the same noise. Mine has done it since 35,000 (I bought it used) and it now has 45,00 miles on it.
YEAH MINE HAS BEEN DOING THIS FOR A YEAR NOW AND I HAVENT HAD ANY PROBLEMS EITHER....THE GUYS AND GALS ON HERE HAVE TOLD ME ALSO THAT IT WAS A NORMAL NOISE AND SHOULDNT HURT ANYTHING....AND THESE MOST OF THESE GUYS KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT SO I WOULD TRUST THEM TOO.....NOT TO SAY THAT THE TRANNY COULDNT GO OUT THE NEXT TIME YOU DROVE IT BUT I DONT THINK IT WILL BE BECAUSE OF THE WHINE IN REVERSE
Silver is right. It's a normal noise, which doesn't affect tranny life/operation at all. The only reason there is a TSB about it is that people complained about it and thought it was a sign of a problem. It may be annoying, but not a sign of trouble ahead.
