If the whole thing was shelled, I would be ordering a Mega Viper come Monday! WIll try tanny shop in Abilene to see if they have an extension housing. WITTRANS has it for $85. Segveral for 4x4 on ebay, but none for 2wd....

And it could have been worse. Just glad it wasn't.

 

I think if I could afford one of those transmission's I'd just go with the Viper, entry model. I can't see much need for a Mega Viper behind a stock 318 or 360. Just my opinion.

 

But I have always been big on overkill...never let a few dollars (mor or less....mostly more...) get in the way!

I had a little more upgraded into this that the entry level viper, and it was working great...until I screwed it up!

did you replace the overrun clutches on the first rebuild.

reckon what caused the carnage?
did the snap ring break first, or did the overrun come apart first?

 

I did not replace the overrunning clutch the first time. Looked and checked out good.

I connected my remote filter backwards and the anti drain back valve prevented fluid flow. Did not know it until it started heating up (got near 200 degrees) before I shut it down. Felt cooler and it was cool to the touch after driving about 100+ miles. Swapped hose connections and cooler and filter got warm immediately. About half our later, tranny started making noise. Sounded like bearing, but I thought is was axle bearings. Did not get that lucky! About $238 in damage, including $85 extension housing. May try to find a used tranny or housing in Abilene tomorrow.

Could have been a lot worse.......

 

That's just plain damn painful to look at. I'm wondering... maybe the intermediate shaft spacer or thrust plate wasn't quite right?

Don't forget to replace that remote filter that started it all. It's sure to be chock full o' sparklies.

I went with the Mega Viper for longevity. The faster and harder you mash the bands and clutches together, the longer they last. The bump to "level three" brings that.

Never been one for hiding the reality....The worst thing for me would be if it failed and I did not know why.

 

Picked up extension housing and a bushing I needed in Abilene today.




Here is the damage to the case caused by the bearing spinning around. (note missing end of snap ring)






Got OD together. New Snap Ring that broke when bearing spun…




OD unit finished.




So I drug it up under the truck and slipped it on the Intermediate shaft.......al the way up....almost.

It stops about 1" from the main case, just slightly away from the OD piston and will not go any farther. I used longer bolts to snug it up, turning output shaft while tryoing to push, beat, and tighten bolts. Locks up and refused to move. Did not put too much pressude on bolts for fear of stripping threads in main case.

Anyone else ever try to install ext case and run into this problem? Joe at trans shop in Abilene assured me that it would go right on when I asked him if park rod would pose a problem.

Frustrated for tonight. Maybe look at it tomorrow before I leave for Austin.....

 

Thanks for all the pics and the write up. I'm sure ill be down this road sooner than later. Mine just growls in reverse when cold temps are present.

That's exactly how my output shaft sensor looked after mine forced a code to be throw due to junk on end and not being able to read anything. I didn't see any shavings stuck to mine, just looked like old dirty fluid gummed up.

My old 01 2wd V6 had a tranny whine for close to 100k before I traded it in, never got worse was just consistent. Might have had the same problem you have here. Lol
