Default crankshaft position sensor problems

In replacing my transmission, i managed to break the crankshaft position sensor. I replaced it and the truck starts and runs fine. The problem is that once the engine warms up it starts misfiring and throwing a scan code for intermittent crankshaft connections. I also noticed that they are prone to thermo failure. The grommet that surrounds it seems to have fallen out and I am wondering if that can cause the sensor to get too hot? Or if it could just be a bad sensor?

What brand sensor did you get? I have not heard that heat was an issue with these.

It runs fine for about 10 minutes and then starts to misfire and throws that error. Engine ran perfectly before I broke the old sensor. Only started doing this after I replaces tranny and CPS sensor.

I'd try replacing it under warranty first. If the new one does the same thing we can start troubleshooting in other areas.

@##$%$@# thing was defective! A pain to get to. Swapped it out and no more codes. I guess there is something to the "thermo" failure.

Thanks for the tip.

At least now you know. I personally use dealer or Standard Motor Products for that stuff.
