Default Will a 96 tranny work in a 99

Need to know if a 1996 1500 RWD (not 4x4) 46RE Tranny will work in a 1999 Ram same same. They both appear to look the same except for the 96 has a speed sensor on the rear housing.

Thank you.

1996 was a transition year for these trucks. The transmission could be a 46RH or a 46RE. If it is a 46 RH, it will not work. If it is a 46RE, it may work. That speed sensor shouldn't matter because the 1999 trucks get their speed readings off of the ABS sensor in the rear differential.

Although the transmission may work, a 1998 or 1999 would be best suited for your vehicle.

If you can't afford to wait until you get one from 1998 or 1999, bolt that sucker in there!

Be careful when installing the torque converter though, you must be careful not to jam it onto the tranny too hard otherwise you will destroy your transmission pump bushing.

Let us know how it goes...

Putting a 46RE from a 96 1500 Ram into a 99 is pretty simple. Had to swap out the Park/Reverse switch and the front cooling line nipple.
One thing I learned is the flanged front seal we removed had to be replaced with a non-flanged seal. It was difficult figuring this out. Seems no one knows there are at least two types of seals floating around out there for the 46RE and it's only been used since like 1960 and up until 2008. Lost a good half a day on this one.
